Leaving beads of sweat on the ground in my wake, I sprinted around the dirty field. It was the second half of our match against Banyan Primary School, and the score was tied at three to three. My team had been training relentlessly day and night to beat Banyan Primary School and win the finals of the inter-school tournament. Everything came down to this match. I had a burning desire to beat the unstoppable opponents.
The muddy football zipped through the air, but I could never tell where it would go! I was tired as I helped pass the black and white ball to my teammates. No, being tired was an understatement. I was exhausted, taking in raspy breaths every second. My tiny muscles moaned in pain, but there was no way that I was stopping, even as the ball veered dangerously close to the goalpost on my opponent’s side of the field.
Out of the blue, one of my teammates passed the slightly torn ball to me. I was nearest to the goalpost, and I had the ball! After all the long hours of training I had endured for this moment, there was nothing that was going to stop me. I kept my mindset on the gleaming championship trophy as I summoned every ounce of my strength and transferred it to my legs. “NO MERCY!” I yelled at the top of my lungs before kicking the ball with all my might. At first, I thought the ball was going to hit the side of the goalpost, but it curved and flew in between the legs of the opponent’s trusted goalkeeper.
Just as the whistle blew, a wave of satisfaction washed over me. A smile broke out over my face. I had scored the winning goal and placed my team in the lead! We had bested the previously undefeated beasts, which made the triumph even better! As the final score was being announced for all to hear, I still could not believe it. My team had won four to three! All my teammates dashed towards me, praising and nudging me with triumphant whoops.
“Sensational!” one of them complimented me.
“Epic!” another one commented. The referee made his way to us and handed us the trophy. I was raised high up in the air by my exhilarated teammates. They also promised me a victory pizza for my outstanding, last-minute goal. Yum!
“Good game!” the other team congratulated us as we shook hands a few minutes later. I felt like exploding with joy after pulling our team to victory. Remnants of our victory cheers refused to leave my head for the rest of the night. I have been through many things in my life, but nothing was as good as that win. It was a day that I would never forget.
