Inappropriate Behaviour

ree

"Ooh la la! What a fancy restaurant!" I exclaimed as I set foot in the cold air-conditioned room, a welcome shield from the sweltering heat. My family and I had been invited to my Aunt Nancy's wedding on a hot Sunday afternoon. I was extremely excited as it was my first time dining in such a fancy restaurant.

After we got seated, my Aunt Nancy greeted us and thanked us for attending her wedding. Completely immersed in my video games, I did not respond. Only after multiple reminders by my parents did I finally look up. "Hi," I said before immediately going back to playing. Frowning, my parents reprimanded me, reminding me to be on my best behaviour and not act like a slob. After eons of their nagging, I finally had a chance to order my food. "Waiter! Waiter! Can I have the menu?" I shouted incessantly. The surrounding guests looked at me with annoyance.

"Marcus! Stop shouting!" my parents snapped. Centuries later, the waiter finally came over and I managed to place my order. However, the food was taking forever to arrive! Feeling bored, I picked up the silverware and started clanking them loudly.

"That little boy has no manners!" I overheard some relatives scowling to one another as they covered their ears.

"Oi, waiter! Hurry up and serve my food! You are so slow!" I screamed. My parents shot daggers at me as they threatened to leave me at home next time.

After waiting for a millennia, the waiter finally served us our delicious food and my parents reminded me to eat with proper table manners. "Forget American style or whatever! I'll do it my style!" I muttered under my breath. With that, I started chomping on my food, continually scooping food into my mouth with my hands. Grains of rice flew everywhere and even little bits of chicken could not escape the same fate.

"Eww. That little boy is disgusting and savage!"

"What a gluttonous pig!"

"What a slob he is!"

Multiple wedding guests—and even a few of my own relatives—started throwing insults at me. My face flared red from embarrassment and guilt gnawed at me for ruining my aunt's once-in-a-lifetime celebration.

After the wedding, my parents reprimanded my uncouth manners and grounded me for one year. I learned my lesson, and decided to never be sloppy over again.
