A Terrifying Experience

“This is the haunted house, son!” my father chirped gleefully. Gulping, I eyed the abandoned building nestled deep in the gloomy forest. That Saturday would go on to be the worst evening of my life. After traipsing down a dimly lit path, we finally reached the infamous haunted house.

As soon as we entered the confines of the haunted house, I spotted broken windows and blinking light bulbs that were almost out. Rusty doorknobs were hanging off their hinges. My father confidently marched through the wrecked house with owls hooting from the rafters. Curtains of dangling cobwebs with spiders crawling on them were everywhere! I trembled like a leaf as I cowered behind my father.

Suddenly, I sensed a rapid movement around me as I watched dancing shadows sway spookily before me. I had never been so frightened in my life. Without warning, I burst into tears and sobbed continuously in terror. However, the worst had yet to happen. My father who I had always known to be brave, suddenly whimpered, his eyes bulging out. Gulping in trepidation, I whipped around to see what he was looking at. A horrifying ghost! I screamed at the top of my lungs.

My father yanked at my arm and we both bolted as fast as our legs could carry us. As we ran, a dark shadow emerged from one of the rooms before us. We stopped dead in our tracks. The greyish-translucent figure let out ghastly howls like a zombie as it swayed from side to side. My face drained of all colour and became as pale as paper. Weakly, I flailed my arms and shoved my father towards the exit of the house. I yelled, “Let’s get out of here before it comes to get us!” while scrambling away on my jelly legs.

We scampered out for our dear lives and only stopped running when we had put a distance between us and the cursed house. Panting heavily, we rued ever stepping foot into that terrifying place. The image of the ghastly shadow was forever etched in my mind. I wondered whether it had been a ghost or my imagination running buck wild. Too bad I would never know as even the thought of going back to investigate overwhelms me with fear!
